    The Neurodevelopmental Spectrum

Outside Rein does not view the neurodevelopmental spectrum from the disorder perspective.  Instead, we understand the neurodevelopmental spectrum from a strengths and areas of growth perspective - each person is an individual with their own unique abilities and challenges.

The following information is provided to illustrate some identified areas of challenge:

Neurodevelopmental spectrum or neurodevelopmental disorders are disabilities associated primarily with the functioning of the neurological system and brain. Examples of neurodevelopmental disorders include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism (ASD), learning disabilities, intellectual disability (ID), sensory processing disorders, cerebral palsy, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and Tourette's syndrome.  Individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders can experience difficulties with language and speech, motor skills, behavior, memory, learning, or other neurological functions (America's Children and the Environment, Third Edition. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Washington, D.C., 2013).

Neurodevelopmental disorders are debilitating diseases caused by abnormal brain maturation early in life. This umbrella concept gathers both multiple types of impairments, such as learning or executive function deficits, as well as deficiencies in social cognition abilities (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). In most cases a neurodevelopmental disorder leads to impaired functioning of the individual and hindered personal, social, academic and/or occupational domains of life (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). There is a tendency for some of these disorders to show a symptomatic overlap. Accordingly, no symptom exclusively belongs to one disorder in the neurodevelopmental range (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Mullin et al., 2013).
